Always eager for repertoire, the most prominent pianist of his generation reflects two iconic sonatas by their composers and intertwines Tchaikovsky and Chopin in a delicate bouquet of waltzes.

The robustness of Tchaikovsky's Piano Sonata Op. 80 cannot hide its vitality and drive, peaking undoubtedly in its third movement—which became the scherzo of his Symphony No. 1—imbued with a fairy-tale charm found in the waltz from Sleeping Beauty. Where there is a waltz, there is Chopin. The waltzes, much more difficult than one might think, that the Franco-Polish composer left for his favorite instrument form a unique collection in their elegance and presence, brilliance, and melancholy. Daniil Trifonov's recital concludes as it began: with a sonata, Bartók's, a masterpiece of formidable execution, concentrated in a style that marries clamor, mystery, and the most cutting energy.
