Opera Comique

AN INSTITUTION

The Opéra Comique was founded in 1714 under the reign of Louis XIV. It is among the oldest French dramatic and musical institutions. Its history was alternately turbulent and prestigious until it was listed on the register of national theaters in 2005. Since then a new era has begun for our house: renewing with its history, it set itself the task of spreading its unique repertoire and securing the production and dissemination of operatic works to the widest audience.

A MUSICAL GENRE

Opéra comique is a genre represented by the Opéra Comique. “Comique” does not necessarily mean that it is intrinsically comic, but sung lines are interspersed with spoken drama. Opéra comique contrasts with opera, which is sung throughout.

A BUILDING

In 1783, the Opéra Comique moved into a theater named after a famous librettist, Charles-Simon Favart. The Salle Favart burnt down twice and was rebuilt on the same site. The Opéra Comique was granted the third Salle Favart in 1898.

RECEPTION

The theater doors open 45 minutes before showtime through the main entrance.
Salle Favart and Salle Bizet: 1 Place Boieldieu, 75002 Paris.

The bar of the Opéra Comique opens at the same time as the theater doors and serves refreshments and snacks.
