by Benjamin Millepied

True to its commitment to bridging aesthetics and inviting exchange, La Seine Musicale continues this season to offer unprecedented creations at the crossroads of genres and artistic disciplines: music, dance, improvisation, poetry...

After the success of Roméo et Juliette in 2022, Benjamin Millepied returns to La Seine Musicale with GRACE Jeff Buckley Dances, his first world premiere blending musical theater and dance. This project celebrates the life and work of Jeff Buckley, an iconic figure in rock music at the end of the 20th century.

Jeff Buckley, a fiery personality with a captivating aura, continues to inspire those who encountered him or attended his concerts marked by lyricism, poetry, and a passionate inner quest for love, driven by his unique voice.

GRACE, the title of Jeff Buckley’s only album released during his lifetime, is a unique work where each track shines with its own brilliance, constituting an album of exceptional musical quality, including the iconic Hallelujah, as well as Lover, You Should Have Come Over, Corpus Christi Carol, and Last Goodbye. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this cult album, and the GRACE show offers the audience the chance to rediscover it.

Benjamin Millepied, passionate about Jeff Buckley’s work, has created a series of tableaux depicting the singer’s life through his varied emotions, passion, pain, love, and tragic death. Using dance as the primary artistic language, the show also incorporates visual elements such as documentary images, video, live sequences, dialogues, and mobile sets to create a living cinematic universe, capturing the legend that Jeff Buckley was.

"Music has a way of accompanying my movements and thoughts; it becomes the soundtrack for a specific period, and that period is forever linked to that music. My mind began to dive into Jeff Buckley’s musical universe, and I wanted to compose a tapestry of dances to his songs to take us deep into his mind, heart, and story. His music is imbued with freedom and authenticity. By delving into the storytelling of his songs and using dance to explore them, the story of his life emerges, the reason for his art, the reason for all this grace." — Benjamin Millepied

DID YOU KNOW?

Benjamin has been passionate about Jeff Buckley’s music for years; dance always came to mind while listening to his songs. It was reading Jeff Buckley: His Own Voice, a book featuring the artist's journal, that a clear narrative path for a show came to his mind. Everything in Jeff Buckley’s life was connected; he was an artist expressing his life through his music, writing about what he went through in his journal, and expressing it in his songs.

ABOUT

The Grace Company

Founders Solenne du Haÿs Mascré and Benjamin Millepied met during the creation of Roméo et Juliette at La Seine Musicale. From this collaboration and a shared vision of choreographic art, the desire to bring The Grace Company’s creation to life was born.

The Grace Company aims to carry projects from the stage to cinema in connection with music and dance.

La Seine Musicale

La Seine Musicale is a music and performing arts center located on Île Seguin an island on the Seine river between Boulogne-Billancourt and Sèvres, in the western suburbs of Paris, France.

Adress:  La Seine Musicale, Île Seguin, 92100 Boulogne-Billancourt, France

Auditorium Patrick Devedjian

Nestled like a gem in a case of glass and wood, the Auditorium Patrick Devedjian is the centerpiece of our building. It can accommodate up to 1,150 spectators and is dedicated to acoustic music, featuring the greatest classical ensembles and musicians, foremost among them the resident orchestra: Insula orchestra.

Its appearance is open to interpretation: a bird's nest, a giant liner, "the ball"...

From the outside, its glass facade is protected and powered by a gigantic array of solar panels that moves in synchronization with the sun, overlooking the concrete liner.

From the inside, the 1,150-seat hall awakens our senses. Dedicated to classical music, jazz, and world music concerts, its light blonde wooden ceiling, cardboard tubes, and paper reveal all the secrets of the excellent acoustics of this stage.

Its Acoustics

Studied by the Nagata and Jean-Paul Lamoureux firm to ensure the best possible sound reproduction for the audience. All precautions have been taken to guarantee exceptional acoustics with the precision of a musical instrument.

Its Design

Modular, its vineyard-style arrangement creates a genuine proximity with the audience surrounding the artists. The interplay of lights, the beauty of materials (wood, mosaics, glass), and the 360° panorama are all designed to match the pleasure of the eyes with that of the ears.

Its design aims to create a sense of visual and acoustic intimacy shared between the audience and the musicians. The atmosphere of the hall is warm, with curved wooden walls and ceiling contributing to the hall’s unique sound identity. Access to the hall is provided on three levels by large suspended walkways offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. These are connected by large staircases forming a continuous promenade around the hall.
